Value Drawings

(The image above has 10 equal steps; yours will be 11 equal steps)

Each of you will be asked to create an 7 step VALUE scale of your own in your sketchbooks or in class created with graphite.

They should be 7 equal steps from black to white. The purpose of this value chart isn't for torture I promise, but in hopes that this experience will seriously help you in seeing a wide and sometimes subtle range of values you should be aware of as you draw. Each step should be a very gradual step into the next value. No extreme jumps from one value to another. I suggest you start with a grid composed of 11 rectangles. Let the first rectangle be white and then let the 11th rectangle be solid 100% black.
Step #5 should be a 50% grey value. Those are the steps I would start with in this process of finding equal gradations.
